Ash Barrens was originally introduced in the 2016 Conspiracy: Take the Crown expansion for Magic: The Gathering, designed by the Wizards of the Coast development team to provide a flexible, utility-focused land for multiplayer formats. The card quickly became a staple in the Commander community due to its ability to fetch any basic land while simultaneously color-fixing and thinning the deck, all while operating as a colorless land if held back.

The Doctor Who version, appearing as card number 257 in the 2023 Universes Beyond collection, features art by Campbell White. This iteration was created to integrate the mechanic into the specific visual and thematic lexicon of the BBC series, depicting the harsh, desolate landscapes frequently visited by the Doctor. The design maintains the functional utility of the original print while providing players with a thematic aesthetic consistent with the Doctor Who expansion's focus on iconic locales from the franchise's history.
