Where it came from
Ashnod the Uncaring was released in 2022 as part of The Brothers' War Commander set for Magic: The Gathering. The card depicts a central figure from the lore of the Brothers' War, a pivotal conflict in the game's multiverse history between brothers Urza and Mishra. Ashnod served as Mishra's chief artificer, known for her disregard for morality in her pursuit of mechanical perfection, making her a fitting centerpiece for a commander card focused on artifact synergy.
The card was illustrated by Donato Giancola, an artist widely recognized for his painterly, classical style that lends a sense of gravity and history to the setting. The design team created this card to represent Ashnod's ability to extract extra utility from the artifacts she oversees, specifically focusing on abilities that would normally trigger only once. It was well received by players who enjoy artifact-themed decks, as it provided a powerful mechanical translation of her role as a cruel but brilliant engineer.
