Where it came from
Assemble the Players was released in 2024 as part of the Murders at Karlov Manor expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set introduced a top-down mystery theme, tasking players with investigating a crime within the iconic city of Ravnica. The card functions as an enchantment that allows players to look at the top card of their library at any time and play creature cards with power 2 or less from the top, leaning into the set’s focus on subtle, investigative mechanics.
The artwork, illustrated by Justine Mara Andersen, depicts an organized gathering of diverse individuals, reflecting the theme of gathering clues and allies to solve a mystery. The design was received as a niche but effective tool for synergistic deck archetypes, particularly those focused on 'weenie' strategies or utility creatures. By focusing on low-power creatures, the card encourages a specific style of play that emphasizes resource management and careful library manipulation.
