Where it came from
Assembly Hall was released in 1999 as part of the Mercadian Masques expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set drew thematic inspiration from the plane of Mercadia, a world defined by its mercantile culture and political intrigue, which served as a departure from the high-fantasy aesthetics prevalent in earlier expansions.
The card was illustrated by Donato Giancola, a noted fantasy artist known for his detailed, realistic style. Giancola’s design captures the architectural scale of the setting, depicting the titular hall as a hub of organized activity. Mechanically, the card was intended to support creature-heavy decks by allowing players to search their libraries, reflecting the themes of assembly and resource management central to the Mercadian narrative.
