Assembly Hall

Assembly Hall was released in 1999 as part of the Mercadian Masques expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set introduced players to the plane of Mercadia, a world defined by its mercantile culture and political intrigue, which served as a departure from the high-fantasy aesthetic of previous sets. The card was designed as a rare artifact that allows players to search their library for creatures sharing a name, fitting the expansion's focus on creature-type synergy and resource management.

The card’s illustration was created by veteran fantasy artist Val Mayerik, who is perhaps best known for his work on Marvel’s Man-Thing in the 1970s. Mayerik opted for a detailed, somewhat mechanical depiction of the hall, emphasizing the architectural scale of the Mercadian structures. While the card is often remembered for its niche utility in deck-building, it remains a notable example of the stylistic shift toward the industrial and clockwork aesthetic that characterized the Mercadian Masques block.
