Where it came from
Astral Drift was released as part of the Modern Horizons set in 2019, a direct-to-modern expansion designed specifically for the Modern format. The card is a functional reprint of the card Astral Slide from the original Onslaught set, updated to fit the modern power level and mechanical identity of the game. It was conceived by Wizards of the Coast design teams to bring popular graveyard and flicker-based strategies to a wider audience of eternal format players.
The artwork for this specific promotional version was crafted to emphasize the ethereal and shifting nature of the card's mechanical effect, which allows players to exile and return creatures to the battlefield. The design team focused on creating a visual language that felt both ancient and arcane, aligning with the high-fantasy aesthetic established throughout the Modern Horizons expansion. Upon its release, it was well-received by players who favored utility-based enchantments and complex, synergy-driven deck building.
