Where it came from
The Atlantean Cavalry card originates from the 1990 Marvel Super Heroes trading card set, a foundational release produced by Impel Marketing. At the time, Marvel sought to capitalize on the surging popularity of comic book collectibles by curating a comprehensive overview of its expansive roster, ranging from prominent Avengers to obscure denizens of the deep. This specific card serves as an entry in the 'Marvel Universe' subset, designed to provide fans with accessible information on secondary characters and factions.
The design of the card reflects the aesthetic standards of early 1990s trading cards, utilizing bold graphic layouts and vibrant, high-contrast imagery pulled directly from the comic panels of the era. The illustration of the Atlantean Cavalry focuses on the aquatic military force of Namor the Sub-Mariner’s kingdom, highlighting their unique technological and biological adaptations. While the set received widespread praise for its encyclopedic approach, individual character cards like this one were primarily valued by collectors for their role in completing the full 162-card base set rather than for the artwork alone.
