Where it came from
Augur of Bolas was originally introduced in the Magic: The Gathering set 'War of the Spark,' released in 2019. This set served as the dramatic conclusion to the long-running Bolas Arc, centering on the conflict between Nicol Bolas and the Gatewatch. The promo version, marked with collector number 41, was distributed as part of the set's promotional initiatives, featuring the iconic expansion symbol of the planeswalker spark.
The card’s illustration was crafted by Svetlin Velinov, a prolific artist known for his clean, atmospheric fantasy style. In this iteration, the Augur is depicted in a moment of arcane focus, emphasizing the character's role as a servant to the schemes of the elder dragon Nicol Bolas. The design successfully integrates the card's mechanical function of card selection with the high-stakes, narrative-driven aesthetic that defined the entire War of the Spark block.
