Where it came from
Auntie's Sentence is a card from the Lorwyn expansion of Magic: The Gathering, released in 2007. The set drew heavily on Celtic folklore and the whimsical, often dark sensibilities of faerie tales, centering on the plane of Lorwyn where the sun never sets and the inhabitants live in a state of perpetual daylight. Within this setting, the Goblins, known as Aunties, occupy a distinct social hierarchy that emphasizes their communal and mischievous nature.
The card was designed to reflect the mechanical identity of the Black-aligned Goblins in this set, focusing on sacrifice and punishment. The illustration, created by artist Nils Hamm, captures the eerie, stylized aesthetic characteristic of the Lorwyn block. Hamm’s work for the set is frequently noted for its organic textures and atmospheric use of light and shadow, which helped establish the visual language for the plane's more unsettling denizens.
