Where it came from
The Automatic Librarian was released in 2022 as part of the Dominaria United set, a collection designed to celebrate the history of Magic: The Gathering by returning to its most iconic plane. The card serves as a thematic nod to the ancient, vast archives of the Tolarian Academy, reflecting the deep lore of the setting where knowledge is preserved through mechanical means. It functions as an artifact creature, fitting the mechanical aesthetic of artifacts found throughout the history of Dominaria.
The art was provided by artist Alexander Mokhov, who aimed to depict a sleek, functional construct tasked with the eternal duty of organizing scrolls and texts. The design emphasizes a sense of clinical efficiency, moving away from the more fantastical or chaotic depictions often found in the set's high-fantasy elements. Upon release, it was received as a functional utility piece in limited play formats, noted for its ability to smooth out a player's draws in the early stages of a game.
