Where it came from
Released in 2016 as part of the Shadows over Innistrad set for Magic: The Gathering, this double-faced card represents the thematic shift occurring in the gothic horror plane of Innistrad. The design reflects the set's narrative focus on the corruption of the Church of Avacyn, illustrating a missionary who undergoes a horrific transformation into a Lunarch Inquisitor when specific conditions are met during gameplay.
The card features artwork by artist Johannes Voss, who utilized the double-faced mechanic to visually communicate the duality of the character. The design team employed this transformation trope to emphasize the psychological and physical breakdown of the plane's protectors, a visual storytelling technique that was well-received by players for its thematic integration of flavor and mechanics within the horror-themed expansion.
