Where it came from
Avacyn's Collar is a rare artifact card introduced in the 2012 Magic: The Gathering expansion Dark Ascension. The card depicts the symbol of the Church of Avacyn on the plane of Innistrad, a silver collar worn by the faithful to symbolize protection from the supernatural threats of vampires and werewolves. Its design reflects the gothic horror themes of the set, emphasizing the ecclesiastical power structures within the lore.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, whose work on this piece captures the intricate, metallic craftsmanship of the symbol against the grim backdrop of Innistrad. Mechanically, the card was designed to interact with the graveyard-centric mechanics of the set, offering a way for players to utilize discarded cards as a resource. It was received as a flavorful, if niche, inclusion that reinforced the narrative tension of the set's storyline.
