Provenance

Where it came from

The Avatar token was released in 2007 as part of the Lorwyn set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Tokens in this set were designed to represent summoned creatures created by other cards, and this specific token was primarily utilized to support the 'Changeling' and tribal-focused mechanics that defined the Lorwyn block. The design aesthetic was influenced by the pastoral yet slightly ominous folklore theme of the setting, which leaned heavily into high-fantasy woodland imagery.

The artwork for this token was created by Greg Staples, a prominent illustrator known for his atmospheric and moody style within the game. Staples aimed to capture a primal, shifting essence fitting for a creature that could embody any race or class within the game's mechanics. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its versatile utility in tribal decks and is now appreciated by collectors as a distinct representative of the era's art direction.
