Where it came from
Avoid Fate was released in 1994 as part of the Legends expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set was unique for its time as it was the first expansion developed by a team outside of the core Wizards of the Coast staff, specifically designed by a group of players who were prominent in the community. It introduced the 'tribal' theme, focusing on creature types, and aimed to expand the mechanical depth of the game during its early, formative years.
The card illustration was created by artist Quinton Hoover, known for his distinctively romantic and illustrative style that defined much of the visual identity of early Magic sets. The artwork depicts a figure narrowly escaping a magical projectile, capturing the flavor of the card's effect. The card was designed to provide green with a rare moment of reactive spellcasting, reflecting the set's experimental approach to the traditional color pie of the game.
