Where it came from
The Azorius Herald was originally printed in the Dissension set in 2006, designed to represent the flavor of the Azorius Senate within the Ravnica block. It functions as a creature with a specific triggered ability that rewards players for playing white or blue spells, emphasizing the bureaucratic and law-abiding nature of the guild. The card was illustrated by Greg Staples, whose work often leans into the intricate, orderly, and somewhat cold aesthetic associated with Ravnica's government.
This particular version appeared in the 2019 Ravnica Allegiance Guild Kit, a product designed to provide players with a curated deck centered around the ten guilds of the plane. These kits served as a retrospective of the guild's history across the various Ravnica sets, repackaging iconic cards with updated frames and set symbols. The inclusion of the Herald in this kit highlights its role as a representative of the Senate's unique playstyle during the transition between the original block and the later Return to Ravnica and Ravnica Allegiance eras.
