Where it came from
Backdraft was released in 1994 as part of the Legends expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Produced by Wizards of the Coast, this set was notable for being the first to introduce the concept of 'legendary' cards, which represented unique characters or entities within the game's evolving lore and were restricted to one copy per deck.
The card features artwork by Susan Van Camp, whose distinct style contributed to the visual identity of early Magic expansions. Mechanically, the card reflects the high-risk, high-reward design philosophy prevalent in the Legends era, intended to offer players creative tactical options despite the set's reputation for complex and occasionally unbalanced gameplay mechanics.
