Bad Deal

Bad Deal was originally printed as an uncommon card in the Magic: The Gathering Core Set 2021, released in July 2020. The set was designed to be accessible to new players while providing mechanical depth for veterans, featuring a cycle of cards that explored various thematic niches. This specific card was created to provide black-aligned decks with a way to force opponents to discard cards while simultaneously drawing cards for the player, balancing the inherent card disadvantage of discard effects.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Bryan Sola, who employed a dark, evocative style to capture the essence of a predatory magical bargain. The design focuses on the visual representation of a soul-binding contract, utilizing high-contrast lighting and ominous imagery to convey the transactional nature of the spell. Upon its release, the card was viewed by the community as a functional tool for midrange strategies, particularly in Limited formats, where the ability to deplete an opponent's hand while replenishing one's own resources is highly valued.
