Where it came from
Bad River was originally released in the Mirage expansion in 1996 as part of a cycle of land cards designed to help players fix their mana bases by searching for specific land types. The card features a mechanical ability that allows a player to sacrifice the land to search their library for a Plains or Island, reflecting the unstable, shifting geography of the Mirage setting. The original artwork by Rob Alexander helped define the aesthetic of these utility lands, focusing on the atmospheric and elemental nature of the terrain.
The version from Dominaria United Commander, released in 2022, serves as a functional reprint that updates the card for modern formats. It retains the core mechanics of the original but features new, vibrant art that fits the visual identity of the Dominaria United set. These reprints are intended to provide accessibility for players building Commander decks, as the card remains a reliable, low-cost utility tool for multicolored strategies that require precise land searching.
