Balan, Wandering Knight

Balan, Wandering Knight was originally released in the 2017 Commander set and later appeared in Commander Masters, card number 458, as part of a curated reprint selection. The character is a feline warrior from the plane of Dominaria, designed to highlight the equipment-focused playstyle common in white-aligned Magic: The Gathering decks. Her ability to automatically attach all equipment to herself reflects her lore as a solitary, highly skilled combatant who relies on her arsenal to overcome overwhelming odds.

The artwork for this iteration continues the tradition of fantasy illustration that defines the Commander Masters set, focusing on a dynamic, heroic pose that emphasizes the weight and detail of her weaponry. The design intent behind Balan was to provide players with a powerful 'voltron' style commander—a strategy centered on bolstering a single creature with multiple artifacts. Upon her initial release and subsequent reprints, she was well-received by the commander community for her efficient mana cost and her ability to quickly turn the tide of a match during the combat phase.
