Balance of Power

Balance of Power was released in 1999 as part of the Portal Three Kingdoms set. This expansion was specifically designed to introduce Magic: The Gathering to the Asian market by drawing inspiration from the historical events of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, a classic work of Chinese literature. It served as a standalone, simplified introductory set intended to lower the barrier to entry for new players while exploring themes of tactical warfare and diplomatic intrigue within a fictionalized version of ancient Chinese history.

The card was illustrated by the artist Liu Ling, whose work for the set leaned into the distinct historical aesthetic requested by Wizards of the Coast for this unique regional expansion. The card's mechanics reflect its title, offering a catch-up mechanism that allows players to draw cards until they match their opponent’s total, emphasizing the shifting tides of battle central to the Three Kingdoms narrative. While the set was initially limited in its release, its unique cards have since become sought after by collectors for their historical flavor and mechanically distinct gameplay contributions.
