Where it came from
The Balduvian Horde was originally introduced in the 1996 Alliances expansion for Magic: The Gathering, serving as a signature creature for the set's snowy, brutalist aesthetic. The original card, illustrated by Donato Giancola, became famous for its aggressive stats hampered by a significant drawback, making it a polarizing figure in the game's competitive history. Its inclusion in Masters 25 was intended to celebrate this legacy, featuring updated art that pays homage to the original's fierce, barbarian-focused identity.
The artwork for the Masters 25 edition was handled by Greg Staples, who aimed to capture the raw, visceral energy of the Balduvian tribes. By focusing on the gritty, weathered details of the warriors, Staples maintained the thematic weight established by earlier iterations while utilizing modern digital painting techniques to enhance the card's visual impact. Within the Masters 25 set, which was designed to curate iconic cards from the game's twenty-five-year history, the Horde serves as a representative piece for the mid-nineties era of gameplay.
