Provenance

Where it came from

Ballot Broker was released in August 2016 as part of the Conspiracy: Take the Crown expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set was designed specifically for draft-based multiplayer gameplay, introducing mechanics that emphasized political maneuvering and table-talk among players. The card functions as a political tool, granting the controller an additional vote during 'will of the council' or 'council's dilemma' effects, directly engaging with the set's central theme of courtly intrigue and influence.

The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a long-time contributor to the game whose work is characterized by vibrant lighting and expressive character design. In this piece, Voss captures the essence of a shady political operative, utilizing a composition that emphasizes the character's manipulative role in the shadows of the throne room. Upon release, the card was well-received by players of Commander and draft formats for its ability to tip the scales in games where voting mechanics are present.
