Provenance

Where it came from

Balustrade Spy was released in 2013 as part of the Gatecrash expansion for Magic: The Gathering, set within the urban, gothic-inspired plane of Ravnica. As a member of the Dimir guild, the card was designed to reflect the secretive, intelligence-gathering nature of the faction, utilizing a graveyard-centric mechanic that allowed players to mill their entire library to find specific combo pieces.

The card’s art was rendered by Greg Staples, who leaned into the dark, shadowed aesthetic characteristic of the Dimir guild. While initially viewed as a niche limited-format card, it eventually gained a reputation among eternal-format players for its role in 'Oops! All Spells' combo decks, where its ability to trigger an immediate game-winning sequence made it a notorious, albeit fragile, centerpiece of competitive deck-building.
