Where it came from
Banshee of the Dread Choir was originally released as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Conspiracy: Take the Crown in 2016. The card was designed to support the set's unique multiplayer-focused mechanics, specifically the 'monarch' keyword, which encourages interactive gameplay by rewarding players for controlling the throne. Its inclusion in 'The List'—a curated selection of cards from throughout Magic's history that can occasionally appear in Set Boosters—highlights its status as a piece of functional design intended to enhance draft environments.
The artwork for the card was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who is known for his atmospheric and dark fantasy contributions to the game. His illustration focuses on the ethereal, haunting nature of the creature, utilizing a muted palette to evoke the grim thematic elements of the Dread Choir. Upon its release, the card was noted for its utility in limited formats, where its ability to drain opponents while simultaneously bolstering one's own board state offered a nuanced tactical advantage.
