Baral's Expertise

Baral's Expertise was first released in 2017 as part of the Aether Revolt expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card represents the character Baral, a recurring antagonist in the Kaladesh storyline, known for his cold, systematic suppression of magical talent. It belongs to the cycle of 'Expertise' cards, a series of sorceries designed to bridge the gap between early-game control and late-game board presence by allowing players to cast a spell with a converted mana cost of four or less for free upon resolution.

The card was illustrated by Victor Adame Minguez, who sought to capture the character's detached, authoritarian demeanor amidst the mechanical, industrial aesthetic of the Kaladesh plane. The card became a staple in various constructed formats, particularly in Blue-based tempo and control decks, where its ability to return multiple threats to an opponent's hand while simultaneously deploying a new permanent provided significant tactical utility. Its reception among players has remained steady due to the inherent flexibility of its dual effect.
