What it does

All Sliver creatures have "2 generic mana: This creature gets +1/+0 until end of turn."

Provenance

Where it came from

Barbed Sliver was released in 1997 as part of the Tempest expansion for Magic: The Gathering. It belongs to the iconic Sliver creature type, which was designed by the Wizards of the Coast development team to introduce a hive-mind mechanic where creatures share abilities with their allies on the battlefield. The expansion served as the beginning of the Rath Cycle, a narrative arc centered on the artificial plane of Rath, which was engineered by the Phyrexians to facilitate their invasion of the plane of Dominaria.

The card's visual identity was brought to life by artist Scott Kirschner, who leaned into the biomechanical and alien aesthetic that defined the Rath setting. His illustration depicts the creature's jagged, metallic-organic form, emphasizing the evolutionary aggression inherent to the Sliver design. Upon its debut, the card was well-received by players for its contribution to Sliver tribal decks, offering a damage-dealing ability that rewarded players for aggressively expanding their board presence.
