Provenance

Where it came from

Barreling Attack was released in 1996 as part of the Mirage expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the third set in the Mirage block, it was designed to introduce new mechanics to the game, specifically focusing on card cycles and thematic depth. The set was the first to be developed under a new internal process, which allowed for a more cohesive design philosophy and a deliberate effort to balance gameplay across different rarities.

The card features artwork by artist Pete Venters, who was a prolific contributor to the game during the mid-nineties. Venters often utilized a gritty, high-contrast style that defined much of the visual identity of the era. Barreling Attack was designed as an instant, reflecting the game's shift toward more interactive combat scenarios, and it was received by players as a niche utility card meant to bolster red-aligned strategies by granting creatures a temporary advantage in offensive power.
