Provenance

Where it came from

The Basking Capybara card from The Lost Caverns of Ixalan Art Series was released in late 2023 as part of Wizards of the Coast's initiative to highlight the illustrative talent behind the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. These cards are distributed within collector boosters as high-quality, frame-less reproductions of the original card art, intended for collectors and enthusiasts to appreciate the visual artistry of the set without the standard game borders and text overlays.

The artwork for this particular piece was created by artist Alayna Danner. Her design process for this card focused on capturing the serene, tranquil nature of the capybara within the vibrant, prehistoric-inspired environment of Ixalan. Upon its release, the piece was well-received within the community for its warm color palette and the charming, peaceful depiction of the creature, which serves as a notable departure from the more aggressive combat-focused imagery common to the fantasy genre.
