Provenance

Where it came from

Batterskull was originally released in the 2011 Magic: The Gathering set New Phyrexia. Designed by the development team to showcase the 'Living Weapon' mechanic, the card creates a 0/0 Germ creature token upon entering the battlefield, which then equips itself with the Batterskull artifact. The card’s design reflects the brutal, bio-mechanical aesthetic of the Phyrexian faction, with artist Mark Zug depicting the equipment as a menacing, skull-shaped construct.

Upon its introduction, Batterskull became a defining card in competitive play, particularly for its resilience. Because the equipment can be returned to its owner's hand for three mana, it allows players to protect the artifact from removal spells or redeploy it to heal their life total. The List version, appearing in later supplemental sets, honors this history by reprinting the iconic card with the original artwork, maintaining its status as a staple for both vintage formats and modern cubes.
