Battle Strain

Battle Strain was released in 2001 as part of the Odyssey expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the Odyssey set shifted the game's focus back to the graveyard as a central resource, introducing mechanics like flashback and threshold that encouraged players to think of the discard pile as an extension of their hand. The card was designed to be a common-rarity utility spell, fitting into the set's broader theme of battlefield attrition and tactical resource management.

The artwork for Battle Strain was illustrated by Glen Angus, a prolific artist who contributed a distinctive, textured style to many cards during the early 2000s. Angus aimed to capture the visceral, exhausting nature of magical warfare, using a gritty aesthetic to represent the card's function of dealing damage to creatures as they engage in combat.
