What it does
Whenever you cast a spell that's both red and white, this creature has base power and toughness 4/2 until end of turn and gains first strike until end of turn.
Mimics don't need perfect disguises. They need only the perfect victims: the naive, the young, or the poor of sight.

Where it came from
The Battlegate Mimic was released in 2009 as part of the initial Planechase product line for Magic: The Gathering. Designed as a localized, multiplayer-focused format, Planechase introduced chaotic planar travel mechanics to the game, and this card was included to provide synergy within the aggressive red-white artifact-creature archetype common to these supplemental decks.
The illustration was created by artist Jesper Ejsing, who captured the creature's shifting, metallic nature through a high-contrast style that emphasizes its ability to adapt its power based on the presence of multicolored spells. It is regarded by players as a niche but effective utility card that rewards specific deck-building choices within the fast-paced, social environment that the Planechase format was specifically built to foster.
