Provenance

Where it came from

Bazaar Trader was released in 2010 as part of the Worldwake set, the second expansion in the Zendikar block. The set focused on the theme of exploration and land-based mechanics, and this card was designed as a niche utility creature. Its unique ability to permanently trade control of permanents between players was created to offer players a creative, if mechanically complex, way to manipulate the board state, particularly in multiplayer formats like Commander.

The card was illustrated by Matt Cavotta, who sought to capture the eccentric and nomadic aesthetic typical of the plane of Zendikar. Cavotta’s artwork depicts a weathered, opportunistic merchant, perfectly reflecting the card's mechanical identity as a shrewd dealer. Upon its release, it was received as a flavorful, albeit high-variance, rare that challenged players to find unconventional interactions rather than relying on standard competitive strategies.
