Where it came from
Bear Umbra was originally introduced in the 2010 Magic: The Gathering set Rise of the Eldrazi. The card design focuses on the 'aura' mechanic with a protective 'totem armor' feature, reflecting the thematic emphasis on survival and strength against the encroaching Eldrazi titans. Its popularity as an efficient utility card in the Commander format led to its selection for the Secret Lair series, a curated product line designed to highlight specific artistic interpretations of iconic game pieces.
The Secret Lair version featuring collector number 1723 showcases a distinct, stylized aesthetic that departs from the traditional high-fantasy illustrations of the original printing. By commissioning artists to reimagine established cards, Wizards of the Coast intended to appeal to players who value the collectible and expressive nature of deck customization. This particular release was well-received by the player base for its unique visual departure, which prioritizes bold compositions over the standard illustrative style found in mainline expansions.
