What it does

green mana: This creature gains banding until end of turn. (Any creatures with banding, and up to one without, can attack in a band. Bands are blocked as a group. If any creatures with banding you control are blocking or being blocked by a creature, you divide that creature's combat damage, not its controller, among any of the creatures it's being blocked by or is blocking.)

Provenance

Where it came from

Beast Walkers was released in 1995 as part of the Homelands expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set was conceived as a top-down design effort, focusing heavily on thematic flavor and narrative storytelling rather than the competitive power level that defined previous releases. Produced by Wizards of the Coast, Homelands drew inspiration from gothic horror and folklore, intending to build a cohesive world around the continent of Ulgrotha, a plane gripped by internal conflict and magical decay.

The card illustration was executed by artist Anson Maddocks, whose distinct, painterly style was a staple of the game's early aesthetic. Maddocks aimed to evoke a sense of primordial, hulking menace consistent with the creature type, though the card itself became synonymous with the set’s reputation for being underpowered. Upon release, the set received mixed feedback from players who found the cards mechanically underwhelming, though it remains a nostalgic touchstone for collectors of the game’s formative years.
