Where it came from
Released in early 2022 as part of the Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty set for Magic: The Gathering, this card reflects the expansion's ambitious fusion of traditional Japanese folklore with a high-tech, cyberpunk aesthetic. The set served as a return to the plane of Kamigawa, updating the original early 2000s setting by imagining how its spiritual themes would evolve over a millennium into a neon-drenched metropolis.
The card features artwork by artist Jason A. Engle, who leaned into the contrast between the organic, delicate nature of the Imperial Moth and the augmented, futuristic environments of Neon Dynasty. This particular card design represents the 'Sagas' mechanic, which tells a story over three turns, blending mechanical gameplay utility with the set's central theme of cultural and technological synthesis.
