Belltower Sphinx

Belltower Sphinx was introduced in the 2020 Magic: The Gathering set Jumpstart. The set was designed to be a self-contained, randomized play experience where players would combine two themed booster packs to create a functional deck, making it accessible for newcomers and casual players alike. The Sphinx served as a mechanical reprint, originally debuting in the 2005 Ravnica: City of Guilds expansion.

The card features artwork by Greg Staples, who captured the creature’s imposing presence atop the cityscape of Ravnica. The design centers on the 'mill' mechanic, where the creature punishes opponents for drawing cards by forcing them to put cards from their library into their graveyard. Within its original context, it was crafted to provide a strong defensive threat for blue-aligned decks, emphasizing the intellectual and often disruptive nature of the Sphinx creature type in the game's lore.
