Provenance

Where it came from

Berserk originated as part of the Alpha and Beta base sets for Magic: The Gathering, released by Wizards of the Coast in 1993. As an uncommon green instant, it was designed to capture the flavor of a creature descending into a reckless, lethal frenzy. Its inclusion in the subsequent Unlimited Edition allowed players continued access to its powerful ability to double a creature's power and grant trample, though it also necessitated a sacrifice at the end of the turn, balancing its utility with a significant drawback.

The card's iconic illustration was commissioned from Dan Frazier, a veteran artist whose distinct style defined much of the early Magic aesthetic. Frazier utilized a raw, visceral approach to depict the chaotic surge of energy implied by the card's effect. Within the game's competitive history, the card gained a reputation for its role in explosive, high-risk strategies, eventually becoming a staple in various formats where its efficiency in ending games quickly remains highly valued by players.
