Provenance

Where it came from

Blade Splicer was released in 2011 as part of the New Phyrexia set, the final installment of the Scars of Mirrodin block for Magic: The Gathering. The card represents the faction of the Phyrexians, specifically the Porcelain Legion, and depicts a Splicer—an operative tasked with fusing biological life with mechanical enhancements. Its design concept reflects the set's central theme of body horror and the forced assimilation of the plane of Mirrodin into the Phyrexian machine hellscape.

The card features artwork by Efrem Palacios, who emphasized the clinical and stark aesthetic of the New Phyrexian aesthetic. Mechanically, the card was received as a strong value-oriented creature, primarily due to its ability to create a 3/3 Golem token with first strike upon entering the battlefield. It became a staple in aggressive white-based decks of the era, notably finding a permanent home in the competitive 'Death and Taxes' archetype within the Legacy format.
