Blatant Thievery was originally introduced in the 2002 Scourge expansion, but this specific iteration was released in the Commander 2015 set as part of the Plunder the Graves deck. Designed for the multiplayer Commander format, the card was reprinted to provide players with a high-impact sorcery capable of shifting board states by allowing the caster to gain control of one nonland permanent from each opponent. The mechanical intent was to reward players for navigating large, multi-player games, offering a dramatic catch-up mechanism that scales based on the number of active participants.

The artwork for this version was illustrated by Clint Cearley, who has contributed extensively to the Magic: The Gathering visual identity.
