Provenance

Where it came from

Blighted Agent was released in the 2011 Magic: The Gathering set New Phyrexia, a set designed to depict the triumph of the Phyrexians, a race of biomechanical horrors, over the plane of Mirrodin. Within the lore of the game, the card represents an agent of the Phyrexian faction, specifically illustrating the corruption of a native Mirran inhabitant through the introduction of Glistening Oil, a substance that grafts metal to flesh and rewrites the victim's morality.

The card was illustrated by Igor Kieryluk, who focused on the unsettling aesthetic of the Phyrexians by emphasizing the juxtaposition of human anatomy with jagged, alien hardware. Mechanically, the card became a staple of the 'Infect' archetype, a strategy centered on winning by dealing damage in the form of poison counters rather than traditional life loss. Because of its low mana cost and inherent unblockability, it remains a highly regarded utility card in competitive formats like Modern and Commander.
