Provenance

Where it came from

Spinebiter was released in May 2011 as part of the New Phyrexia set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set depicted the final victory of the Phyrexians, a race of biomechanical horrors, over the plane of Mirrodin. Designed to represent the 'infect' mechanic, which focuses on overwhelming opponents with poison counters rather than traditional damage, the creature embodies the set's themes of grotesque transformation and biological corruption.

The artwork was created by illustrator Matt Cavotta, who sought to capture the unsettling, serrated anatomy characteristic of the Phyrexian aesthetic. By focusing on the creature's predatory, insectoid features and its ability to deal damage without being blocked, Cavotta emphasized the relentless and invasive nature of the set’s antagonists. Upon its release, the card became a notable inclusion in infect-themed decks, recognized for its specialized role in aggressive strategies.
