Blighted Cataract

Blighted Cataract was released in 2015 as part of the Battle for Zendikar set, a block designed to return players to the high-adventure, exploration-themed plane of Zendikar. It belongs to a cycle of five non-basic lands that provide utility through an activated sacrifice ability, representing the corrupting influence of the Eldrazi titans as they drained the life force of the world. The design intent was to provide players with a colorless mana source that offered late-game card advantage, serving as a strategic tool in limited environments and mid-range constructed decks.

The card’s visual identity was established by artist Vincent Proce, who sought to capture the unsettling, warped aesthetic of the Eldrazi’s wake. The illustration emphasizes the eerie, crystalline transformation of the landscape, consistent with the set's broader artistic direction of depicting a natural world in the process of being systematically dismantled. Upon release, the card was received as a functional utility land, appreciated by players for its ability to bridge mana needs and card draw in longer games without requiring a significant investment of deck space.
