Blighted Shaman

Blighted Shaman was released in 1996 as part of the Mirage expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a set, Mirage was significant for being the first to be designed as a standalone draft environment, shifting the game's development philosophy toward cohesive mechanical themes and environmental storytelling. This particular card was designed to support the black mana identity of the expansion, which heavily leaned into cycles of life and death, decay, and sacrificial mechanics.

The card's evocative illustration was created by artist Christopher Rush, a prominent figure in the game's early history whose work defined much of the visual aesthetic of the nineties era. Rush aimed to capture the visceral and somewhat disturbing nature of shamanistic dark arts, utilizing his signature style of high-contrast shading and expressive character work. Upon its debut, the card was received as a functional, if niche, utility piece for black-aligned strategies, appreciated by players for its ability to convert sacrifice into board advantage.
