Provenance

Where it came from

Blightspeaker was originally released in the 2007 set Planar Chaos, a set built on the premise of a diverted timeline where the color pie of Magic: The Gathering was reordered. It was later reprinted as card number 73 in the 2013 Modern Masters set, which served as a curated compilation designed to provide players with access to staple cards that had become difficult to acquire for the Modern format.

The card was illustrated by Ron Spears, an artist known for his contributions to the game during the mid-2000s. Spears sought to capture the unsettling, corruptive aesthetic associated with the Rebels faction, utilizing a muted palette and distorted figures to reflect the character's role as a herald of decay within the game's mechanics.
