Where it came from
Blind Obedience was originally released as part of the Gatecrash expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2013, designed to represent the flavor of the Orzhov Syndicate. Mechanically, the card was crafted to impede aggressive strategies by forcing artifacts and creatures to enter the battlefield tapped, reflecting the oppressive, debt-laden control the Orzhov exert over the citizens of Ravnica.
The card’s iconic illustration was created by artist Seb McKinnon, who sought to capture the unsettling, ethereal aesthetic of the guild. Featuring a haunting, ghostly figure draped in ceremonial robes, the design highlights the blend of religious ritual and financial tyranny that defines the Orzhov. It was later reprinted in Ravnica Remastered, where it was selected for its enduring popularity among players who utilize stax and control archetypes in Commander and other eternal formats.
