Provenance

Where it came from

Blinding Powder was released in 2005 as part of the Betrayers of Kamigawa set, the second expansion in the Kamigawa block for Magic: The Gathering. This set drew heavily on Japanese folklore and mythology, focusing on the conflict between the mortals of the plane and the spirits known as kami. The card, an artifact equipment, was designed to reflect the tactical, gear-focused nature of the warring clans depicted in the set's narrative.

The artwork was illustrated by Ben Thompson, a long-time contributor to the game. His illustration aimed to capture the essence of a sudden, disorienting strike, emphasizing the ephemeral and magical properties of the powder. Within the competitive community, the card was viewed primarily as a niche utility item, valued for its ability to protect creatures during combat by granting them the capacity to unequip themselves to escape damage.
