Where it came from
Blood Oath was released in 1999 as part of the Mercadian Masques expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Set on the plane of Mercadia, the expansion introduced themes of commerce, mercenary politics, and social maneuvering, moving away from the high-fantasy aesthetic of previous sets toward a more grounded, steampunk-adjacent mercenary motif.
The card features artwork by Mike Dringenberg, a prominent illustrator best known for his influential work on the Sandman comic book series. His contribution to this card captures the visceral nature of the spell’s effect, emphasizing dark, atmospheric linework that aligns with the grim tactical nature of the Black mana color identity it represents in the game.
