Blood Pet

Blood Pet was originally introduced in the Tempest expansion in 1997 as a common black creature designed to provide a small but immediate boost in mana. Its mechanic, allowing a player to sacrifice the creature for a single black mana, echoed the design philosophy of fast mana and risk-reward gameplay prevalent in early Magic: The Gathering sets. The card was reprinted in the Classic Sixth Edition core set in 1999, which served as a foundational release meant to streamline rules and reintroduce staple cards to a growing player base.

The artwork for Blood Pet was provided by artist D. Alexander Gregory, whose interpretation features a hunched, unsettling figure that leans into the grim aesthetic of black-aligned cards of the era. The design was well-received by players looking for efficient early-game utility, particularly in decks focused on sacrificing resources for short-term gains. By the time of the Sixth Edition printing, the card had established itself as a reliable, albeit modest, inclusion for aggressive strategies that required a consistent mana curve.
