Blood Rites

Blood Rites was released in October 2004 as part of the Champions of Kamigawa expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set drew heavily from Japanese folklore and Shinto mythology, introducing a distinct aesthetic that departed from the traditional Western fantasy themes that had dominated the game for over a decade. The set was designed to explore the conflict between the physical world and the spirit realm, with this particular card representing the darker, ritualistic elements of the setting's narrative.

The card was illustrated by the artist Wayne Reynolds, whose high-energy and dramatic style became a signature look for the game during this era. Reynolds was tasked with conveying the visceral, supernatural horror inherent in the Kamigawa spirit-world.
