Provenance

Where it came from

Boartusk Liege was released in 2008 as part of the Shadowmoor set for Magic: The Gathering. The set introduced a shift toward hybrid mana costs and themes of twilight and gloom, drawing heavily from the folk-horror aesthetics of Celtic and European mythology. As a creature belonging to the Liege cycle, the card was designed to incentivize players to build decks focusing on the green and white color identity, rewarding them with a static power boost for their multicompartmental creatures.

The card’s artwork was rendered by Danish illustrator Jesper Ejsing, whose work is known for its tactile, painterly quality. Ejsing sought to capture the ferocious, overgrown nature of the creature, depicting the boar as a beast fused with the primordial forest itself. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its efficiency in aggressive deck archetypes, becoming a staple in formats that allowed for the combination of green and white strategies.
