Bone to Ash

Bone to Ash was released in 2015 as part of Magic Origins, a core set designed by Wizards of the Coast to serve as a bridge between the foundational aspects of the game and the narrative backstories of five key Planeswalker characters. The card functions as a common-rarity counterspell that exiles the target creature, reflecting the set's thematic focus on pivotal moments that define a character's transformation and power.

The illustration was created by artist Nils Hamm, whose work often features an ethereal, organic aesthetic. For this piece, Hamm focused on the visual translation of a spell that physically dismantles its target into dust, capturing a sense of sudden, definitive erasure. The design was well-received by players for its clear mechanical utility and thematic consistency within the blue color identity, marking it as a reliable tool in both limited draft environments and casual play.
